TrainingPeaks Variability Index
Variability Index is a great metric to modulate effort according to zone. I wanted a flat, big ring, zone 2 effort today, but I also wanted to ride it super smooth with very little power fluctuation into other zones.
A high VI indicates significant fluctuations in effort, suggesting a more challenging and variable workout, potentially leading to greater fatigue. Conversely, a low VI signifies a more consistent effort level throughout the session.
👉 Monitoring VI helps athletes gauge the effectiveness of their pacing strategies and assess the overall demands of their training, aiding in optimizing performance and recovery.
For this ride, I chose the flattest route in my area and nailed a VI of 1.02, which is a solid score. The red line is elevation and the yellow is power.
